Signing out

Posted October 22nd, 2008 by Rachel

Well, on Monday came the good news that the plan’s still for me to go in on Thursday – no nasty heparin infusion! Yay for me! Stopped the warfarin from Monday, so hopefully my INR should be just about where they want it by now. I’ve packed my Coaguchek machine, as instructed. Hopefully the combination [...]

Op attempt #2

Posted October 17th, 2008 by Rachel

On Monday I heard from the hospital that they’ve got a new date for me – in on 23rd October (next Thursday) for the op on 24th October (Friday). That was the plan anyhow.
I’ve been for the pre-op assessment today though, as usual a very long-winded and tiring affair. Apart from the usual blood pressure, [...]

More adventures with a sharp pointy object

Posted October 16th, 2008 by Rachel

Yay! Finally, success!
The new lancets supplied by the nurse practitioner did the trick (get a much larger blood sample), and today I managed to get the stabbing finger with sharp pointy object and working the machine working together, and actually got a result!
After the first beep of the machine I’d got my eyes [...]

NHS waiting list world record

Posted October 10th, 2008 by Rachel

Wednesday when I got in from work I got a bit of a shock, in the form of a telephone call from my neurosurgeon’s secretary. When I saw my neurosurgeon last at the beginning of September, we decided that given the ongoing problems with my LP shunt, it was probably worth investigating my still in, [...]

Wrestling treacle

Posted October 10th, 2008 by Rachel

Yesterday Mr Postie arrived with a package for me. It was a “light tent” I’d bought on eBay for photographic purposes. It’s basically a bendy wire frame, covered with a nylon type material that diffuses light, and also, with the provided backdrops, provides a plain covered backdrop for photographing objects and eBay items etc.
The [...]

Thoughts on Google Chrome

Posted October 3rd, 2008 by Rachel

Now I’m not normally one for installing and using betas willy-nilly; they’re usually bug ridden and unstable, and I have quite enough of that just working on a computer with Windoze installed on it, thank you very much!
When I read the new Google comic book on the development of the new browser on the block [...]

Further adventures with a sharp pointy object

Posted October 2nd, 2008 by Rachel

Today’s attempt at using my new INR self-testing machine was so very nearly there, but at the last minute went rather wrong.
Armed with advice from my co-admin on my forum, who’s a practice nurse and runs an INR clinic using the ‘pro’ version of the machine I’ve got, and my experiences from last week on [...]

Word of the day: fettle

Posted September 30th, 2008 by Rachel

Okay, so I can’t think of anything new or exciting to post today (I’ve not stabbed myself with any more sharp objects recently ), so I’m introducing a new feature – it’s called “Word of the Day”, and is based on the word of the day on dictionary.com, and today’s word is…“fettle.”
fettle \FET-l\, [...]

Rachel’s adventures with a sharp pointy object and lots of plasters

Posted September 29th, 2008 by Rachel

How hard can it be stabbing your finger with a sharp object and then putting the resulting blood that collects on a strip of plastic?! Harder than it looks, is the simple answer. The long version of it is below.
Due to Factor V Leiden (FVL), a genetic clotting disorder I have, and the fact [...]

This time I mean it

Posted September 27th, 2008 by Rachel

Okay, so I said at the end of August that I was back…and then kinda disappeared again! What can I say! Circumstances overtook me, and as usual life for the past few weeks has been crazy (even crazier than usual). A couple of weeks ago though I made two big decisions after ending up staying [...]
